چکیده

otal hydraulic resistance on an upland agricultural site may be influenced by several factors including standing vegetation. In this laboratory study, Darcy-Weisbach roughness coeflcients were measured for corn, cotton, sorghum, soybeans, sunflower, and wheat vegetation. Experimental variables used in this investigation in addition to crop type included plant population, row spacing, row orientation, andflow rate. For some of the experimental tests, a single row of vegetation was oriented within afEume parallel to the principalflow direction. For the remainder of the tests, rows of vegetation were placed perpendicular to the flow using row spacings and plant populations recommended by crop management specialists. Measurements of discharge rate and flow velocity were used to calculate roughness coeflcients for Reynolds number values ranging from approximately 530 to 22,000. Regression equations which relate roughness coeficients to plant population, row spacing, and Reynolds number were developed from the Iaboratory &fa. With the exception of wheat placed perpendicular to flow, roughness coeflcients produced by standing vegetation were negligible. On upland agricultural areas, total hydraulic roughness will be influenced primarily by frictional drag over the soil surface, and residue and ground cover.

Modelling and Simulation of Water Supply Systems for Feedback Control

Operation principles of water supply systems are considered and the mathematical expressions for the system major components such as pipes, reservoirs and pumps are represented. Behaviour of thesystem is investigated by slow movement of fluid flow around steady-state operating point. Head losses changing nonlinearly with water flowrates in pipes are represented by the Darcy-Weisbach and the Haz...

Resistance to surface flow such as Manning's and Darcy-Weisbach rouphness coefficients were an important input for estimating soil erosion by soil erosion process models. Also, it is very important for designing and implementing soil and water conservation practices. The objective of present research was predicting Manning's and Darcy-Weisbach rouphness coefficients in surface of a loess soil u...

Relationship between Hazen-William coefficient and Colebrook-White friction factor: Application in water network analysis

Although Darcy-Weisbach (D-W) equation has been accepted as a standard resistance equation in pressurized flow, some researchers and engineers still prefer to utilize Hazen-Williams (H-W) equation for analyzing water distribution networks (WDNs) in practice. The main difference between roughness coefficients of these two resistance equations is that D-W friction factor varies with Reynolds numb...

A New Methodology for Velocity Estimation in Sheet and Rilled Overland Flow Using modified Manning's Roughness Coefficient

Manning's roughness coefficient for flow over bare soil is needed in order to determine other hydraulic parameters such as flow depth and velocity in overland flow, parameters needed to calculate streampower and shear stress in erosion process studies. A modified equation of Manning's n was developed to estimate flow velocity in shallow overland flow in experiments undertaken in a 5.8 by 1 m fl...

Atmospheric Momentum Roughness Applied to Stage-Discharge Relationships in Flood Plains

A numerical model is developed to determine the flow depth and discharge relationship for turbulent flows over vegetated flood plains. The model is based on the turbulent boundary layer similarity concepts developed for atmospheric and pipe flow hydraulics. Here, the Darcy–Weisbach formula is modified to account for vegetative resistance by application of surface roughness lengths developed fro...
